Alicia Walton addresses that in the book. I don't have it with me at the moment, so I can get direct quotes, but it basically comes down to the evidence pointing to a particularly functional understanding, and while the materialism may be in view also, we can't just assert that it is so. Instead we have to find the evidence pointing us to both being true and the evidence (as far as he sees it at this point) seems to point to the functional. Of course, he said it much better than I did.

Point of contention: The Gap Theory, unless one is unawares, it actually quite sound not only scripturally (contrarily to what the establishment would have you) and theologically, and scientifically. One must do his research to learn this of course instead of just assuming what the establishment hammers into all our brains. There is a reason for that hammering….

There are several excellent scholarly works that I would recommend:

Without Form and Void (Custance)
Dake’s Annotated Bible
Earth’s Earliest Ages (Pemper)
The Pre-Adamite World (Perry Stone)

These stand out amoung many others…

Nice review. I’m wondering, though, why the functionalism/materialism dichotomy? It seems to me they’re not mutually exclusive, and the text could address both easily.
