Re the "typical pastorate is 2 to 5 years or so" I think that trend has been reversed, at least in the churches I'm involved with. I'm in the LI NY area but I know many the the mid-west and northwest and they tend to stay much longer. I've read that a pastor doesn't really become effective until after 7 years.

The joke when I started was keep your sermons on file (in a real box) and when you leave after three years you just recycle the material. The "truth" behind that joke is what (IMO) contributed to the weakness of the American church.

Dennis,

First of all, praise God for such a long ministry with the same church. That's certainly something to be celebrated in the American church, where the typical pastorate is 2 to 5 years or so.

Secondly, thank you for sharing your thoughts and experiences. Hearing the same sentiments "from the field" (so to speak) is a great encouragement to me!

I'm a pastor of 27 years in the church that I planted on Long Island, NY.

I would be classified as at least a charismatic. (non-denominational)

I appreciate your words and all my experience has brought me to much the same place you express here.

I fondly look back on the many miracles of changed lives, however I am also disturbed these same seemingly "un-miracles".

Peace...
