There will be No Sun

Today was absolutely gorgeous. The sun is out in glorious splendor, and the temperature has hit the mid-50s. That’s Fahrenheit for my foreign readers. Some of you may know that the past few weeks here in Louisville have been filled with ice and snow storms leading to massive power outages, and the difference is incredible as the snow and ice melt away.
It reminds me of C. S. Lewis’s great work, The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe, where the land of Narnia is ruled over by the White Witch. The White Witch has placed Narnia under a curse where it is always winter, but never Christmas. The curse is finally broken at the defeat of Witch by two “sons of Adam” and two “daughters of Eve,” along with Aslan, the great lion, who is killed and then resurrected. Lewis’ allegory is hard to miss. Christ came into this world in order to break the curse of sin, and in his death and resurrection he defeated Satan, sin, and death.
In a typical “already-but-not-yet” fashion, Christ has crushed the head of the serpent (Genesis 3:15), and the snow has begun to melt. Yet, we await the day when we see the ultimate destruction of Satan. The beauty of today, after the dreariness of the past two weeks, reminds me of more than just the coming of the Messiah as a man, but it also reminds me that in the future there will be a day when there will be no sun. Just as Christ has come in the flesh once, so too will he come again. This time, he will come to visibly defeat Satan, sin, and death, and usher in the renewed earth and heavens. John paints the picture for us as he saw it in the Revelation:
“And there will be no night there—no need for lamps or sun—for the Lord God will shine on them. And they will reign forever and ever. ” (Revelation 22:5, NLT)
As I rejoice in the beautiful weather today, I also rejoice for that day when there will be no need of a sun, because the glory of God will burst through and destroy the darkness.

It’s enough to give one the chills, thinking about that day.

Indeed. It really is the Christian hope.
