When I was in Haiti with the Army, I saw a tarantula whose body was literally the size of my head. It was so big that the rock I threw at it actually bounced off and had no effect on it!
My family on my father’s side comes from up Cairns way. It’s a beautiful place – rainforests, jungles, white sandy beaches, etc. – but there’re some fantastic dangers as well. Like in ‘Stinger season’, when the box jelly fish and other poisonous jelly fish are around, you’re not allowed to swim unless you’re wearing what basically amounts to a full-body stocking. And recently they had to impound one of the largest crocodiles ever found, because on x-ray they discovered a complete human skeleton (but couldn’t just kill the thing, because it was such an anomaly).
But then, we don’t have bears, wolves, or any of your American carnivorous creatures. So we traded up on the scaly and creepy.
As I was walking down an alley-way last night to get to my car, I kept trying to picture what it would be like to see that spider hanging from one of the trees. Honestly, I probably would have had to go in the other direction around the block so I couldn’t be eaten along with the bird

The link wouldn’t work… now I really want to see it haha.
And you’re definitely right about the little ones in the States. In my home state we have black widows and brown recluses… both nasty little things. Apparently the spider in the picture is a “golden orb weaver” which has a supporting cast of your regular, every day garden spider. Not dangerous at all… unless you’re a bird apparently.

Bryan,
The origiaal link above was to a movie poster from the 1950’s about a 100ft tarantula.
Nonetheless, this picture ought to really disturb you. It is a 30 cm spider just discovered in Asia.

I’m pretty sure things like this is God’s way of saying “don’t live here! look at what creations I put here. Stay away!”
I’m pretty sure that the angel put outside the garden of Eden was like this.

Nathan, Brandon, and ElShaddai have all pretty much summed up my reaction as well.
Damian – wow. That just furthers my thesis. Although where I’m from does in fact have bears and coyotes. Some tales of wolves as well.

Bryan:
I decided to disturb my blogging audience also, and linked to those photos in my Five Points of Interest.
As I close my eyes at night I can still see glimmers of that spider…

Sorry, couldn’t resist.
Although in America, it’s the little spiders that are the deadly ones, not the big ones.

To think, I might have been close to that thing when I spent some time in Asia. The Horror!
Huntsmans are just bad dudes in general. We don’t need new ones popping up. I blame the fall. There is nothing Edenic about that thing.
